CASA Celebrates Two Additional Releases Cattle Egret May 16, 2008—Barn Owl May 22, 2008
CASA is achieving new milestones with each passing day – the receipt of new avian wildlife brings new challenges and with them opportunities for learning and the joy of releasing rehabilitated avian wildlife. Through the diligent and careful care and feeding by CASA’s Avian Clinic Manager Carole Manganaro, assisted by San Ignacio veterinarian and wildlife rehabilitator Dr. Isabelle Paquet-Durand, CASA was pleased to make two additional releases in May.
Shortly after the release of the Mottled Owl on January 30, 2008, CASA received a Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), also known as a Western Cattle Egret, and a Barn Owl (Tyto alba) also known as a Common Barn Owl, to distinguish it from other members of the family Tytonidae. The Cattle Egret is thought to have arrived in the Americas in the later part of the 19th century and spread to North America in the mid-20th century. Its rapid expansion may well be linked to the growth of cattle ranching. The Barn owl, sometimes referred to as a Common Barn Owl, is recognized as the most widely distributed species of owl.

Upon arrival at CASA the Egret was described as "...bright, alert and responsive," but quite thin with a possible fracture of the right ulna. On April 3, the ulna of the Egret's right wing was pinned by Dr. Eduardo Tesecum. For the six-plus weeks to follow the bird's dressings were attended to by Carole, and many long nights were spent obtaining a variety of insects to supplement the Egret's diet. By April 29th Drs Tesecum and Paquet-Duran...
